Maryland Handgun Qualification License (HQL) Class

4-Hour Class and Range Training | $150

Maryland residents generally need a Handgun Qualification License (HQL) before purchasing, renting, or receiving a handgun, unless they qualify for an exemption. An HQL is not required simply to possess a handgun that is already legally owned.

Our four-hour HQL course is designed to meet Maryland’s firearm-safety training requirement. Instruction covers Maryland firearm laws, safe handgun handling and operation, secure firearm storage, home firearm safety, handgun mechanisms, and the required practical component.

You do not need to own a handgun before attending. A handgun can be made available for your practical training and qualification. Please contact us before class to confirm firearm, ammunition, fingerprinting, and range arrangements.

Planning to Carry a Handgun?

An HQL allows an eligible Maryland resident to purchase, rent, or receive a handgun; it does not authorize carrying a handgun. If your goal is to legally wear and carry a handgun, consider completing the Maryland Wear and Carry Permit course instead.

A person who receives a valid Maryland Wear and Carry Permit may apply for an HQL as “Permit Exempt.” Maryland State Police guidance states that Permit Exempt HQL applications do not require another Livescan fingerprint submission and are not charged an HQL application fee.
