I first decide to take the Gun Safety Instruction journey when I saw on the news all of the useless and avoidable handgun mishaps and incidents involving children. It's not the children's fault!! It's the parents' fault. Listen to me "Karen" gun mishaps are not the guns' fault any more than an automobile accident is the automobiles' fault or the forks' fault for the obesity our society. It's treating handguns like they are to be feared and hidden away. What we should be doing is treating them for what they are protection of our family. Teach our children to respect them for their purpose and not to use them as toys or items of curiosity. When you take away the curiosity and replace it with knowledge it takes away a big part of the problem. The other and probably the most important issue at hand is the availability to provide the means for that curiosity. Secure your weapons and ammunition so they can't have access to the gun without you. Even when you can in your mind say "my child knows better than to play with my gun" as great a line as that is. You may lose in that believe when it doesn't happen that way or your child's friend is over and playing hide and seek and has no training at all to respect and avoid the unknown. That's right what is your defense in your mind now. I will close with this last Idea, if your 13,15- or 16-year-old child didn't have access to your weapon they wouldn't be able to take it to school and play "show and tell" or worse become a school shooter. With all I have written knowing that maybe one person read this to the end I would appreciate even that result. Instruct your children on gun safety, lock up your weapons, monitor your car keys, teach portion control on the dinner plate. We offer FREE Child Gun Safety Classes for the child and parents.
